Another Pixel Prairie Update

Sorry for my late response to those of you wondering what to submit, I'm not neglecting this thing it's just that lately things have been really hectic and busy and now there's been a death in the family so life is just getting crazy at the moment so I haven't had as much time to be online lately as I would've liked.

That being said, there are no limitations as to what to submit to the magazine.  When I first thought up the idea, I really wanted it to showcase the talent we have here instead of set any sort of limitations on subject.  I was interested in what sort of creative things and images you people could come up with so I wanted to keep it completely open ended.  So, submit anything.  If you took a bunch of shots of your dog this summer and your really enthralled by them then by all means submit them.  If you took a ton of shots while travelling on vacation and you feel they're worthy of submission, submit them!  I also understand that some people might find the complete freedom a tad daunting so if any of you want to come up with a sub-topic of sorts then I'm totally up for that.

In terms of the number of photos allowed to be submitted, I really haven't set a limit but try and keep it reasonable.  I figured 5-6 photos per person would be nice but I'll take 10-12 as well, I'll even take 2 or 3 ;-)

So to sum things up, there's no limit to subject...  The only limit is that the shots should be taken during the Summer months (which I'm counting as May, june, July and August.)

Pixel Prairie Update (Submission Rules)

Ok, here's the deal, I had hoped to get a place holder or something up that would explain submission rules etc. for the webzine but life just hasn't allowed for that quite yet.   So, since I'm sure some of you are itching to start submitting stuff I'll lay out the rules here and hopefully I'll be able to put something up at the domain sometime next weekend (read: hopefully.)

Submission Rules for Pixel Prairie Issue One (Summer '05):
1. All Photos must have been taken during the summer months of 2005.  They don't have to be photos taken in Alberta, they just have to be from you...  An Alberta Photoblogger ;-)

2. Photos should be no larger than 640x480 pixels and submitted in jpeg format.  This does not mean they can't be smaller however.  For example, if you wanted to submit a full sized portrait shot then it would be 480x320.  A medium format 6x6 shot could be 480x480.  A full frame landscape could be 640x427.  I think you get the point.

3. Photos and/or Photo projects can be submitted with a title and/or written description, story, whatever.  However, all Photos/Photo projects NOT submitted with a title will be labelled  'Untitled' so you should be aware of that.  Also, If you want your full name, different e-mail/url or something added to your photos then please let me know.  Otherwise I'll probably just use your photoblog Alias' and your photoblog e-mail/url info.

4. All Submissions should be made to submit@pixelprairie.ca by August 22, 2005.

5. I think that's it... Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything.

I realize some of you may think the max photo size may be a bit restrictive but since this is the first issue I figured it best to be a bit reserved when it came to the amount of pixels on screen.  If there's enough people who think we need larger photos then I could probably be swayed to kick it up to 700x525.  I'll make sure to jump in with a post every now and then reminding people of the submission due date and as I said before, hopefully I'll have a place holder or something up by next weekend.

And the Winner is...

The ABP Seasonal Webzine finally has a name, thanks to all of you who sent me your votes to make this choice a little less difficult.  The title will be 'Pixel Prairie' which just edged out Ikonic Alberta and Alberta Aperture for top spot.

I purchased pixelprairie.ca tonight and will begin taking submissions as soon as I get all the DNS stuff sorted out.  More info on submission sizes etc. will be coming soon so keep watching the site for more updates (most likely this weekend sometime.)

Alberta Photobloggers 'Zine' Needs a Title! (and more)

So I'm sure the majority of you know that there are plans in the making to create a Alberta Photobloggers zine that would be published seasonally.  That being said, we need a name for this little project of ours and I'm really not the person to be coming up with cool names for these types of things.  If you look at my domain name (consisting of 4 very random numbers) and the number of 'Untitled' images I have on my photoblog then you'll quickly realize that words and titles just aren't my thing.  So, seeing as this is a community project I was hoping some of you might have some suggestions or perhaps we could start a little discussion on how/what it should be titled...

I've also decided that the first issue of this thing will be entirely in html with the slight possibility of a Flash flavored version.  If there's no Flash version this time around there definitely will be in coming issues down the road.  The reason I've been a little hesitant about html versions is the fact that coding for X number of browsers is a real pain in the ass.  Flash is great because compatibility will always be the same in any platform however I do realize that dial-up users are still out there and definitely should be catered to.

For all of those who have been offering help with the code etc.  I really appreciate the offers and may come calling in the future.  As it stands right now I should be able to handle the majority of the work myself but you never know when life could get busy and I might need to hand a portion of the project over to someone else.

Anyways, back to the original topic at hand...  What should we call this thing??  As soon as we get a name I'll start taking photo submissions :)

Crazy Idea!?

I've been sitting on this idea for awhile now, going to throw it out there to see if there might be any interest in this at all.

Anyone interested in doing a web based Alberta Photobloggers mini web zine??  I figured it would be a good way to work together as a community and maybe generate a little more exposure for each of us.  I figure it wouldn't be too hard to do some seasonal issues, so basically a quarterly release or maybe only twice a year if quaterly issues sound too daunting.  The idea would to have members (who want to participate) submit 5 or 6 photos (more?) to the 'zine',  I volunteer to edit it and do the layout design.  We could release it in a Flash and/or PDF format.  I'm open to any other suggestions, articles or creative writing could be thrown in as well...  Anyways, it's an idea and a crazy one at that.  If about 6 or 7 people are interested in participating then I'll get started on a rought draft.
